For over 30 years the band has been trying to answer the question “What kind of music do y’all play?’ w/out success. Last Call started out as a pretty straight ahead bluegrass band (if you can be such a thing w/out any skilled pickers) but now ‘days you’ll hear drums & electric guitar alongside the mandolin and “doghouse” bass. If you like “rootsy” American music, trad country tunes, swing, blues and/or old rock n’ roll – chances are you’ll hear a few tunes you recognize – and a few more that you kinda wish you did!
Abe, Mike and Merle started picking together early spring of 2016 and with that, The Smokin Dobroleles were born. With their diverse influences and unique instrumentation they create an acoustic sound all their own. Kittie joined full time early summer with some much needed low end. The band has been very busy playing shows around west MI in 2016 and really polishing the songs they play. Abe Kurzer on dobro, Mike Renna on ukulele, Merle Seelhoff on guitar and Kittie Tuinstra on bass, often adding Drew Najor on mandolin and guitar and Jeff Johnson on flute and saxophone. Mike Renna writes many original songs and the group plays a wide array of covers as well, everything from reggae, bluegrass, jazz and country with a sprinkling of the Dead. Improvisation is a strong element in their performances and they are always adding new songs to their repertoire. The Smokin’ Dobroleles rarely pass on an opportunity to play or collaborate with other artists and are highly focused on sharing their passion for the the beautiful thing we know as music!
